One of the best spots in the Metroparks system is Chapin Forest Reservation, a 390acre preserve that boasts both hiking trails and a cross-country skiing center. Chapin Forest became public land in 1949, when Frederic Chapin purchased the land to protect it from logging and then donated it to the state. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources still owns the land, but under a lease agreement, the land is managed by Lake Metroparks. The park features a mature forest filled with beech, maple, oak, tulip, and hemlock trees; a former sandstone quarry; and rocky outcroppings of Sharon conglomerate.
Among the wildflowers commonly found here are Dutchman’s breeches, hepatica, bloodroot, and trillium. The park hosts a large campground with 90 electric sites and 180 nonelectric sites. The campground has showers, flush toilets, and laundry facilities. The park also has a nature center, amphitheater, and recreation area that offers volleyball, basketball, and horseshoes. In addition, a group camp area and three camper cabins are available. The 93-acre Findley Lake is stocked with bass, bluegill, and crappie; and it contains two boat ramps, although electric motors are the only ones permitted.
