Because oxy-fuel gas flow volumes are generally lower than in a comparable air-fuel furnace, it is accepted that the total propensity for batch dust contamination is also lower. However, refractory surfaces near the batching operation may be exposed to similar amounts of batch dust contamination in either environment, although contaminated refractories in this area of an oxy-fuel melter may be expected to degrade more rapidly than when exposed to a comparable air-fuel environment.
